Desert computers do not fail like other computers.

Twenty years of repairing machines in a place that spends a third of the year above 100 degrees taught us that most standard computer advice was written for a mild climate. Here is what actually kills equipment in this valley, and what to do about it.

In the Coachella Valley, heat and power events cause most computer failures, and dust is an accelerant rather than the root cause. Consumer laptops and phones are rated for an ambient operating range topping out near 95°F and a powered-off storage limit of 113°F. A closed valley house held at 90°F in August can exceed that storage limit at interior surfaces, and a parked car passes it within about an hour. The result is that lithium batteries, power supplies, and CMOS batteries fail first, usually with the data completely intact. The second cause is monsoon-season surge damage arriving on coax and phone lines rather than through the power cord. Blow sand comes third: it packs into heatsink fins and raises operating temperature, which makes the first problem worse.

None of this is contrarian for its own sake. Each one is standard, sensible guidance that was written for a climate this valley does not have.

"Dust is what kills computers. Get it blown out once a year and you are fine."

What we find in the valley

Dust is real here and blow sand is worse than household dust, because it is finer and it packs into heatsink fins rather than resting on top of them. But a clean machine in a 115°F garage still dies, and a dusty machine in a 75°F living room usually does not. Dust matters because it raises temperature. Temperature is the thing that ends the part. Clean the machine, absolutely, and then fix where it lives.

What we find in the valley

An external drive sitting next to the computer shares every risk the computer has. Same hot room in July, same circuit during the same surge, same burglary, same flood from the same water heater, and the same closed house all summer. We have opened plenty of desks where the computer and its only backup died the same week. An external drive is a convenience copy. Your actual backup needs to be somewhere else, which in practice means cloud backup or a drive that lives at another address.

What we find in the valley

The unplugging is right. The rest is where seasonal homes lose equipment. A house at 90°F is not a 90°F environment for a laptop pressed against a west-facing wall in August, and lithium-ion batteries degrade fastest when they are hot and sitting at a full charge, which is exactly how most people leave them. If you are closing the house, the laptop and the tablet should either come with you or be stored near half charge in the coolest interior closet in the house.

The practical takeaway: the number on your thermostat is not the number your equipment experiences. Interior surfaces on sun-loaded walls, closed rooms with no air movement, garages, attics, and vehicles all run well above it.

Heat

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity permanently with heat exposure, faster when stored at a full charge, and they swell when they go far enough. A swollen battery lifts the trackpad or bows the case, which is often the first visible sign. Power supply capacitors dry out. Adhesive bonded screens delaminate. Thermal paste hardens and stops transferring heat, so the machine runs hotter, which accelerates everything above it on this list.

Power

Valley monsoon season runs roughly July into mid-September and brings lightning and grid events. The damage path that surprises people is the coax or phone line, because almost every household protects the power cord and leaves the signal line unprotected. That is why the modem dies and the lamp plugged into the same strip does not. Use a surge protector with a coax or Ethernet pass-through and actually route the line through it.

Sand and airflow

Blow sand is finer than household dust and it compacts into heatsink fins instead of sitting loosely on them, so a machine can look clean and still be thermally choked. Floor-level towers pull the worst of it. Raising a desktop a few inches off the floor and keeping it out of a closed cabinet does more good than most people expect.

Closing the house for the summer.

The technology half of the shutdown, in order. Takes under an hour.

  1. Verify an off-site backup finished. Not started, finished. Open the backup app and confirm the last successful date before anything gets unplugged.
  2. Charge laptops and tablets to about half, then power them fully off. Not sleep, not hibernate. Fully off, then unplug from the wall.
  3. Move portable devices to the coolest interior space. An interior closet or a central hallway cabinet. Away from west and south exterior walls, windows, the garage, and the attic.
  4. Leave desktops in place but off the floor and out of closed cabinets. Towers handle storage heat better than anything with a battery, but they still need air.
  5. Protect anything that stays live. If the router, cameras, or a smart thermostat stay on for remote monitoring, put them on a surge protector that passes the coax or Ethernet through it, not just the power cord.
  6. Write down what you turned off and what accounts may lapse. Streaming subscriptions, password expirations, two-factor devices. Arrival day is much shorter with the list.
  7. If the house will sit above 85°F, take the laptops with you. This is the single highest-value item on the list and the one most often skipped.

What temperature should I leave my house at over the summer to protect computers?
Cooler than the number most people use. Apple publishes a non-operating storage range of -13 F to 113 F for its laptops and phones, and most PC makers publish similar limits. A closed Coachella Valley house held at 90 F will exceed that against a west-facing interior wall on a 115 F afternoon. If the house will be empty, either take the laptops and tablets with you or hold the house closer to 80 F. Desktop towers tolerate storage heat better than anything with a lithium battery in it.
Should I unplug everything before I leave for the summer?
Unplug, yes. Leave the battery full, no. Storing a lithium-ion battery at a full charge in a hot house is the worst combination for long-term capacity. Charge laptops and tablets to roughly 50 percent, power them fully off, unplug them, and keep them out of direct sun and away from exterior west and south walls. Leave the router plugged in only if you use remote cameras or a smart thermostat, and put it on a surge protector if you do.
My computer sat in a closed house all summer and now it will not turn on. Is it dead?
Usually not. The most common post-summer failures we see are a swollen or fully discharged lithium battery, a power supply that no longer holds under load, and a CMOS battery that gave out. All three are inexpensive compared to a new computer, and none of them touch your data. Do not throw it out and do not buy a replacement until somebody has actually looked at it. Diagnostics are free.
Is my laptop damaged if I left it in the car?
Possibly. On a 110 F valley day, a parked car interior can climb past 150 F within about an hour, which is far beyond every consumer storage spec published. The damage is usually cumulative rather than instant: battery capacity drops, the battery may swell and push the trackpad or keyboard up, and adhesive-bonded screens can delaminate. If a laptop has been in a hot car, let it return to room temperature before powering it on, and check whether the case still sits flat on a table.
Does dust really kill computers in the desert?

But in our experience dust is rarely the root cause on its own. It raises operating temperature, and heat is what does the actual killing.
Why does my modem die every summer but nothing else does?
Because the surge did not come in through the power outlet. Valley monsoon storms, roughly July into mid-September, produce lightning and grid events, and the energy frequently arrives on the coax or phone line. Most households plug the modem's power cord into a surge protector and run the coax straight into the back of it, which leaves the modem as the only unprotected path into the house. Use a surge protector with coax or Ethernet pass-through, and route the line through it.
Is an external hard drive a good backup in the desert?
It is a poor primary backup here, and this is where standard advice fails locally. That drive sits in the same hot house, plugged into the same circuit, in the same room, during the same surge, and it gets stolen in the same burglary. It is a convenience copy, not a backup. Use cloud backup or an off-site copy as your primary, and keep the external drive as the fast local second copy if you want one.
How hot is too hot for a computer that is actually running?
Most consumer computers are rated for an ambient operating range topping out around 95 F. That is room temperature, not the temperature inside the case. A desktop in an un-air-conditioned garage, a laptop on a patio table, or a tower crammed into a closed cabinet is already outside spec before it does any work. If a machine runs loud and then shuts itself off, that is thermal protection doing its job, and it is telling you something.
Do swamp coolers hurt electronics?
They add a variable that refrigerated air conditioning does not: humidity, and in hard-water areas, mineral carryover. Garages and workshops cooled with evaporative coolers are a bad place to keep a computer year round. If that is where the machine has to live, keep it off the floor, keep it away from the airflow path, and expect to service it more often.
Should I move my desktop off the floor?
Yes, especially in this valley. Floor level is where blow sand, pet hair, and vacuum-stirred grit concentrate, and it is where the intake fan is pulling from. A tower raised even a few inches on a stand or shelf pulls in noticeably less. It is the cheapest life-extension there is.
